Raphael Katzen, Ph.D., P.E.
Consulting Engineer
Dr. Katzen has more than 60 years experience in chemical engineering and related fields including inorganic chemicals and petrochemicals, waste disposal and chemical recover low-temperature technology, plastics, biomass utilization, synthetic fuels, alcohol production, conservation, and pollution abatement. His organizational experience includes research and development, plant operations, design and construction, contract negotiations, technical service, project management, consulting engineering services and administration.
In 1953, he established Raphael Katzen Associates and in 1956, Raphael Katzen Associates International, where he was president and CEO until 1997. Since 1998, he has operated as a self-employed consulting engineer. Dr. Katzen has a bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate in chemical engineering from Polytechnic University (formerly Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn).
Dr. Katzen is a member of several professional societies and has received many honors during his career. He is a registered professional engineer in Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Washington, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

Brian H. Davison, Ph.D., B.S.E.
Consulting Scientist
Brian H. Davison is the chief scientist for Systems Biology and Biotechnology at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He recently served two years as the director of Life Sciences Division. Dr. Davison was previously a distinguished researcher & biochemical engineering research group leader. In his 21 years at ORNL, he has performed biotechnology research in a variety of areas including bioconversion of renewable resources (ethanol, organic acids, solvents), non-aqueous biocatalysis, systems analysis of microbes (cultivation and proteomics), biofiltration of VOCs, mixed cultures, immobilization of microbes and enzymes, metal biosorption, and extractive fermentations.
The interface of solid, liquid and gas phases between biocatalysts and their environments is the theme that connects his work. This has resulted in more than 90 publications and six patents. His multilab team received an R&D100 Award for “Production of Chemicals from Biologically Derived Succinic Acid” in 1997. He received his Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the California Institute of Technology, and his B.S.E. in chemical engineering, from the University of Rochester. Dr. Davison co-chaired the 15-26th Symposia on Biotechnology for Fuels and Chemicals and served as editor of Proceedings in Appl. Biochem. Biotechnol. from 1994-2005. The Symposium grew from 150 to more 400 attendees during these 12 years.
Other accomplishments include serving as the chair of the ORNL Institutional Biosafety Committee from 2001 to present. In 2006, the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) named Dr. Davison a fellow. The Society of Industrial Microbiology at the Symposium on Biotechnology for Fuels and Chemicals gave him the 2006 C.D. Scott award. He is also an adjunct professor of chemical engineering at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville.
